updated - Artivism 2 Sta Filomena and th

With the success of Artivism 1.0, we were encouraged to pursue Artivism 2 with the theme “Artivism 2.0: Sta. Filomena and the Sea.”  The main focus behind the movement is our plastic problem. Improper waste disposal and the lack of garbage segregation is the cause behind one of the most pressing problems of our country - The Philippines ranked 3rd in the major contributors of plastics in our oceans. The plastic problem causes a domino effect. It clogs up our rivers and drainages resulting in floods, and once in the ocean, it poses real threats to our marine life. They get eaten by marine organisms, they prevent water flow, they cover corals and seagrass beds thereby destroying ecosystems. The lack of information and awareness regarding this problem causes not only environmental issues but health and sanitation concerns as well, especially for our coastal communities.

One good example of a community undergoing these issues is Santa Filomena in Arevalo, Iloilo City. Hence, Artivism has put together a series of activities that seek to raise awareness of our plastic problem and its drastic effects on our waterways.

The event's aim was to punch an eye-opener, raising awareness and encouraging individuals and communities to become pro-environment. On the side, it will help in the development of art tourism and art education. It is also our mission that this project serves as an inspiration for other towns to replicate.

OUR PROCESS

We collaborated with EarthingPH, a small non-profit organization that focuses on environmental education and awareness projects. Through this partnership, we were able to select Santa Filomena in the municipality of Arevalo as the venue of Artivism 2.0. Moreover, as we conducted interviews and as we worked with the local government unit, we decided to focus on a creative awareness campaign against single use plastic.

The artists’ selection was more specific as we aimed to make the mural paintings more locally-focused.

We also had workshops, presentations, and a forum.

Before the event, we held discussion gatherings and conceptualizing with all the artists involved.

All the king’s horses and all the king’s men will never gather up all the plastic and put the ocean back together again.
